Clean Vs Natural

With the rise of organic, plant-based skincare brands launching across the beauty and wellness industry, these two terms are now banded around within product descriptions and beauty reviews on a regular basis. My clients often ask me the difference between the two terms, so here’s my take on what each stands for.

CLEAN

  • Free from toxic potentially-harmful ingredients.
  • Safe for the planet, sustainable and cruelty free.
  • Effective and stable from naturally-derived or nontoxic synthetic sources.

NATURAL

  • Can be toxic or harmful (e.g. Poison Ivy)
  • May come from endangered plants (e.g. Sandalwood) or animal by-products
  • Susceptible to climate and environmental changes, which can reduce efficacy.

I like to use a number of different brands within my therapies, cherry-picking from a wide selection of both clean and naturally derived products and ingredients. I’ve been working with brands such as Votary, De Mamiel, and Wild Source Apothecary, and love that fact that these companies embrace the ‘clean’, planet-kind movement, working towards being fully sustainable in the following ways:

  • RENEWABLE RESOURCES – Using renewable sources where possible
  • PLANET-FIRST PROCESSES – Formulating their products using the latest sustainable methods. No deforestation and developed in far proximity from rainforests. Low water usage.
  • CONSCIOUS PACKAGING – Fully recyclable and Forest Stewardship Council-certified boxes (FSC).
  • ETHICAL VALUES – 100% cruelty free, suitable for Vegans

Retreat life in lockdown…

Hello everyone, I haven’t written an update on here for ages, opting to send emails out to my database and a few posts on Instagram instead over these past few months. But today I wanted to write a short note to say hello to all my lovely clients and followers on various social channels and upload a few pictures of what I have been up to since my girls stopped going to school and life as we know it turned upside down!

I know we are all feeling the same, some days are better than others for me. Homeschooling my 6 year old twin daughters has brought me near to tears on occasion, especially now the novelty has worn off having ‘Mrs Brown’ as their new charge came into force. But, I draw on my strength and mettle and try to turn things around in my head and heart, knowing that ‘this too shall pass’ and one day we will look back and talk about the time the world slowed down. Spring is in full flow, the sounds and sights of nature surrounding Ash Cottage really do take my breath away. I feel so lucky to be able to go off for a run or nature ramble with my girls without seeing a soul for miles… Social distancing at its finest.

I do however, miss giving my treatments. My little therapy room has now been converted into an office for my husband and I to use for the time being. I get so much positivity on an energetic and emotional level when connecting in therapy with people. To not be able to offer and hold space for someone is affecting me more that I thought it ever would.

I hope to be open again in a few months but until then I am going to post some self care and wellbeing tips and messages to help get us through these challenging times…

With love, Julie x

Therapy time…

As I work on a bespoke basis, every treatment experience is unique to each individual person.  I now offer booking therapy time, rather than specific treatments, this allows for a very personal tailor-made therapy journey and clients can expect to experience some or all of the following modalities depending on their requirements:

Sound healing,  massage, face therapies, acupressure, shiatsu, reflexology, hot stone therapy, lymphatic work, reiki and craniosacral therapy.

30 minutes – £40:00

60 minutes  – £65:00

90 minutes – £95:00

120 minutes – £125:00

There are only a few spaces left in December before I close for the Christmas break, so please do get in touch if you want to book some deeply relaxing and healing downtime!

My Koshi Bell…

Adding different experiences to my therapies is very important to me, as I believe that to engage as many senses as possible throughout a treatment ritual, lifts it from a ‘nice’ treatment to something other-wordly. I want to offer an experiential journey that is remembered long after the treatment has finished, one that encompasses as much holistic expression as possible. Using sound therapy helps to facilitate shifts in our brainwave state from beta (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness) and even reach theta (mediative state) and delta (sleep: where internal healing can occur).

Sound helps create the pathway to this place of stillness the same as a mantra helps you to arrive at the still point of meditation. Various tools used for sound therapy include the voice, drums, Himalayan or Crystal Singing Bowls, tuning forks or Koshi Bells.

The Koshi bell or chime is my tool of choice. Crafted in a workshop at the foot of the Pyrenean mountains, eight chords are welded with silver at the base of a resonance tube made of bamboo, a material renowned for its acoustic quality, the Koshi chime is deep in sound and rich in overtones. There are four melodies, Terra (earth), Aqua (water), Aria (air) and Ignis (fire). I have chosen Aria, or air as I enjoyed this sound the most, and I use it either at the beginning or conclusion of each bespoke treatment.
