My Koshi Bell…

Adding different experiences to my therapies is very important to me, as I believe that to engage as many senses as possible throughout a treatment ritual, lifts it from a ‘nice’ treatment to something other-wordly. I want to offer an experiential journey that is remembered long after the treatment has finished, one that encompasses as much holistic expression as possible. Using sound therapy helps to facilitate shifts in our brainwave state from beta (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness) and even reach theta (mediative state) and delta (sleep: where internal healing can occur).

Sound helps create the pathway to this place of stillness the same as a mantra helps you to arrive at the still point of meditation. Various tools used for sound therapy include the voice, drums, Himalayan or Crystal Singing Bowls, tuning forks or Koshi Bells.

The Koshi bell or chime is my tool of choice. Crafted in a workshop at the foot of the Pyrenean mountains, eight chords are welded with silver at the base of a resonance tube made of bamboo, a material renowned for its acoustic quality, the Koshi chime is deep in sound and rich in overtones. There are four melodies, Terra (earth), Aqua (water), Aria (air) and Ignis (fire). I have chosen Aria, or air as I enjoyed this sound the most, and I use it either at the beginning or conclusion of each bespoke treatment.

The power of massage…

Treatment room goals…Looks inviting don’t you think? But, spending time on a massage couch does more than just offer an hour or so of relaxation in a beautiful space. Massage is the healing power of touch from knowledgable hands of a skilled therapist bringing about a whole plethora of benefits to both psychological and physiological wellbeing. Relieving stress and reducing anxiety, helping release fibromyalgia and adhesions, soothing tension headaches and helping us to sleep better. Massage can relieve symptoms of depression, improve cardiovascular health and reduce the pain of osteoarthritis.

In 2017, the Cornwall-based Made For Life Foundation saw a need for those living with cancer to be welcomed into spas rather than seen as a contra-indicated client who needed a GP referral letter. The foundation designed and launched a fully accredited 3 day Cancer Touch Therapy training course. This advanced course enabled qualified beauty and massage therapists to gain a deeper understanding of what cancer is, the staging and grading of cancer and how treatments for cancer can affect the need to adapt spa therapies. A game-changer in the wellness stakes when one is needing all the comfort and support out there in what must be one of the most challenging times of life. So, celebrate this amazing age-old therapy and book some regular couch-time, regular investment for your health and wellbeing, not just for an annual spa day treat.
